In order to collect details about the functioning of the library and reading habits among students,I along with Alen Joe Antony of Class IX-B visited the Palakkad District Public Library on 29/12/13.
At first we introduced ourselves and informed the purpose of this visit.They welcomed us wholeheartedly.
Then we met Mr.T.R.Ajayan,the secretory,who gave us the permission to take the interview.After that we interviewed Mrs.Bincy,Mrs.Bliss and Mrs.Sheeja.
They shared us the information that this library started functioning from 29/08/2009.The strength of this library is 905 as on that day.75% of the total members are students.We saw students studying in classes 2 and 3 visiting the library.They said that the members are increasing day by day.There were many facilities like Net cafe,issuing of CD's and many more which are utilized by the members properly and fully.The MLA's and MP's funds were utilized for buying books.For children we saw a special corner with comics,short stories and folk tales.Mrs.Bincy said that the interest in reading and acquiring knowledge motivated her to be a librarian.Her favorite author is Mr.M.T Vasudevan Nair.She also said that she preferred reading Malayalam books.We asked whether the e-books caused any decrease in the demands of the printed books.She hesitated and said that the demands were increased.She told that children should read regularly and it will definitely help them in their life.She said that reading newspapers regularly will improve our vocabulary.Here many competitions are conducted annually.Some of them are Debate,Drawing and Painting and so on.Then we told her about the library we have in our school and she became happy to know the activities conducted in our school to inculcate reading habits among students.And at last she told us to take the membership.We expressed our gratitude to them for spending their valuable time with us.It was really a nice experience.
