The Magic Finger

The Magic Finger is a fantasy story written by Roald Dahl in 1962.The book gave me a thrilling experience. This book is narrating by a little girl who is eight years old. If she gets crossed and see red she will use the magic finger which will make some changes for that chosen person. The farm next to her house is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Gregg. They have two children, Philip and William. Philip is of eight years old and William is of eleven years old. Sometimes the girl goes to their farm and play with them.

One thing is that Mr. Gregg and his two children loved to go for hunting. Every Saturday morning, they would take their guns and go for hunting. But the little girl doesn’t like that, she tries to stop Phillip and William from hunting but they do not mind that.

Then one day she saw Mr. Gregg and his two children coming out of the forest with lovely a deer. This made her cross and she started to shout. And before she was able to stop herself, she did something which she never meant to do. She put the magic finger on them all. But she even put it on Mrs. Gregg, who was not there for hunting. The little girl had been telling herself that she would never put the magic finger upon anyone – even though such incident happened to Mrs. Winter, her teacher.

One day when Mrs. Winter scolded the girl, she got cross and saw red then she put the magic finger upon Mrs. Winter. Can you imagine then what happened. Whiskers started growing from Mrs. Winter’s face and a tail at her back.

Let us come back to Mr. Gregg’s family. In the afternoon they went for hunting again and shot sixteen wild ducks. Then it became dark, they were on the way to house. Suddenly, four wild ducks flew over their head. Mr. Gregg tried to shoot them many times but couldn’t. When they were home it was night and they went to bed.

Next day, when Mr. Gregg and his family woke up they were not having their arms and hands but the wings of wild ducks instead. They were really astonished. And they flew away to the sky. When they all looked down from the sky they saw four wild ducks walking in their garden. The ducks were having the hands instead of wings!

Mr. Gregg began to cry as they can’t go to their own house. Philip and William asked “where will we sleep today?” Mr. Gregg said that they have to sleep in the nest. And they began to collect sticks and straws to build a nest. At last they built a nest, but then they were tired and hungry. They approached an apple tree and ate some apples. And in the dawn they flew back to their nest and slept.

Next day when they woke up they looked down and saw the four ducks. Three of them were having guns pointing the nest. One duck was guiding them to point in the nest. Mr. Gregg and family cried and said “don’t shoot! Please don’t shoot! “The ducks said “But you are always shooting at us, Yesterday you shot all my six children”. Mr. Gregg said “I will not do that again” Then the ducks said “give your word that you will not shoot any animals or birds”. Mr. Gregg said “I will not do that as long as I live and I will break my guns into little bits” The duck said “well!... you may now come down”. Then Mr. Gregg and family flew down. Suddenly for them everything was seen black, then to red, blue, green, golden. They realized that they were standing in the garden of their house. Everything was back to normal once again. They were dancing with joy. And above their head there were ducks flying with joy.

In one corner Mr. Gregg was Smashing all the three guns. In another corner Mrs. Gregg was placing flowers upon sixteen tiny mounds of soil which were the graves of the duck which had been shot by Mr. Gregg and his children. In another side Phillip and William were feeding the birds.

The Author Roald Dahl reminds us to be compassionate and lovable to other creatures in the nature.
