The Curious Incident of the Dog in
the Night-Time
By Mark Haddon
This is quite a different book by Mark Haddon. It is published by David Fickling books. It has
275 pages and costs Rs.399.
The protagonist of the book is Christopher
John Francis Boone who is 15
years old. He has a superbly logical brain. He understands science and maths well but he can’t understand human emotions. He
knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number
up to 7,057. He lives on
patterns, rules and timetables. He hates going out and having outside food. He also
hates yellow and brown. Red was his favourite colour. He loves animals and he
had a pet rat called Toby. One day his neighbour’s dog, Wellington was killed
and this makes Christopher a terrier on the track. He starts to write a mystery
novel, as he was fascinated by Sherlock Holmes. He starts with the curious
incident of the dog in the night time, but ends up uncovering other mysteries
too!
As I mentioned
earlier, this book is very different and interesting. When I opened this book, I
found this strange numbering of the chapters! But soon I after I started
reading, I found out that this book’s chapters are numbered according to the
prime numbers as Christopher loves them. This book also contains many designs
and diagrams because it is based on the protagonist’s thoughts. The author was
very successful in making the fictional character seem real! I should say this
is a very original novel!
I would like to
suggest this book to all the readers club members as it is exclusively
available in the library for us!!
