JOOTHAN - OMPRAKASH VALMIKI

JOOTHAN
Author: OMPRAKASH VALMIKI (TRANSLATED TO ENGLISH BY ARUN PRABHA MUKHERJEE)
Publisher: SAMYA

One of the most anticipated book. I had tried to purchase the book 'Joothan' from Amazon OR Flipkart. but one day when I saw that the school library had the book. I reserved it. Got the book in 1 to 2 days time.

When I finished the first few pages of the book I could imagine the poverty and the lives of Dalits. The Dalits were not allowed schooling in those days. Even though they had attended them they had a miserable school days. They had to sit in the floor in a mat but the mat did not reach the place where he was sitting. Omprakash Valmiki's life is something that makes us think about the older days. they were treated very badly in the school. Omprakash Valmiki became the first in his Tyagi town of Barla to pass the high school with high marks. Even Omprakash had to eat the left overs of the tyagis, who are regarded as high class. The Dalits did not get good treatment as they did not have money and they died due to severe illness.

Joothan is a book everybody should read because then only we would be able to know the protests that Dalits had done for their upliftment and about their poverty and the food they got in the village. They were lined in the weddings to collect the leftovers of the people which included food waste which they carried to their house. This autobiography of Omprakash Valmiki makes even the small children to know the struggles led by Dalits in the past. It is a wonderful book and by reading this we can make a good use of time.
