Dr. MS Swaminathan is known as the father of the Green Revolution in India, his efforts saved most of the countries in South East Asia from starvation. Dr Swaminathan was born on August 7, 1925 in Kumbakonam. His ancestral home is at Mankomp in Kuttanad taluk of Alappuzha district. He completed his 10th standard from Kumbakonam, joined Maharaja's College (now University College) in Thiruvananthapuram in 1940 for graduation in Zoology. He pursued further studies at the Coimbatore Agricultural College and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute. He obtained his PhD in Genetics from Cambridge University in 1952 and came to India to become a pioneer in agriculture with a desire to develop science to provide income to many thousands of families in addition to making agriculture a source of income.
Dr.Swaminathan became internationally known for developing Indian eco-friendly and high-yielding seeds and disseminating them among farmers. In 1966, he transplanted Mexican wheat varieties to Indian conditions and reaped hundreds of seeds in the fields of Punjab, making him the father of the Green Revolution in India.
The country honored Swaminathan with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards for his contribution to the country. He also received the Ramon Magsaysay Award. Swaminathan was chosen by Time magazine as one of the most important people who saw Asia in the 20th century. Swaminathan, who was Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research from 1972 to 1979, was deeply moved by the famine in Bengal in 1943. This is the factor that motivated him to dedicate his life to eradicating world hunger.
