This is a short story by Leo Tolstoy. The central character Ivan
Vasileivich was having a conversation with his friends on the impossibility of
improving individual character without a change of the conditions under which
men live. He is a person who firmly disagrees with one of his friend who told
that it is all by environment, that the environment swamps man.He believes that
it is all by chance. He began to illustrate those thoughts by relating incidents
of his own life. He starts narrating his love story which did not work out well.
This is a nice story and I insist all of you to read this book.
